Rømersgade in Copenhagen

Nina la Cour Sell, partner in the worldwide architectural firm Henning Larsen Architects, lives with her four-year old daughter Europa in an apartment in Copenhagen. The apartment has just been through a complete renovation, which included moving the kitchen to the living room and then converting the old kitchen to a child’s bedroom.

My daughter Europa thinks it was an excellent idea to move the new kitchen into the living room as she then could have her room in the old kitchen space. The new kitchen, however, is so lovely that she is rarely in her room, but is rather sitting at the kitchen table helping with the cooking. Europa is also very fond of the freezer door as it’s easy to open - now she snacks on ice cream and frozen corn all the time!” Nina la Cour Sell says.

I chose BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group design, since the kitchen reminds me of Japan, where I have studied architecture and traveled extensively. I'm very inspired by everything that reminds me of Japan, and I especially fell for the kitchen's simple, quiet design with the natural materials,” says Nina la Cour Sell about her new kitchen.

I was fascinated by the idea that I could give an IKEA kitchen a personal and exclusive look. Since my apartment is small, and the kitchen is both a part of my living room and also contains a wardrobe, I was looking for a design that does not immediately look like a kitchen. My new kitchen pieces look more like a sideboard in the living room than a real kitchen,” Nina la Cour Sell adds.
