BIG is a Copenhagen- and New York-based group of architects, designers, builders and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and development since 2005. BIG is currently involved in a large number of sizable projects throughout the world. From Two World Trade Center in Manhattan, to the National Gallery of Greenland in Nuuk, and the Maritime Museum of Denmark in Helsingør.
Now, they have specially designed a kitchen for Reform, which not only has an affordable price, but also certain novel characteristics. All handles are made from a material we are familiar with, just not from our kitchens. They are made from the black fabric used to make seat belts for cars. This gives the kitchen a hyper-modern quality.
The BIG kitchen is available in white and oak with a composite countertop and composite wash, which creates a beautiful, holistic feeling. The composite can be substituted for stainless steel for a more industrial look. Or the two can be combined to produce a third visual expression.
BIG’s kitchen series is available for all the models and sizes offered by IKEA. Drawer fronts and doors are available in two different materials: 19 mm white spray-painted MDF and 19 mm veneered oak. The handles are identical on both models and are made from the same black nylon used in seat belts. The handle is mounted by a black-painted fitting screwed in to the back of the door or the drawer front.
The BIG-designed handle is affixed on one side of both drawer fronts and cabinet doors. It can be placed on either the right or left side – you decide.
The handle straps are made of 2 mm thick, black, woven nylon. The 80 mm wide strap is mounted as a loop and can easily be removed and cleaned in a dishwasher at a maximum of 50° Celsius, if needed. These handles are extremely durable.
BIG recommends a 10 mm countertop in black GetaCore with a welded sink to integrate with the countertop. The bottom of the sink is made of stainless steel. GetaCore is a mineral plate very similar to Corian. The price of your countertop depends on the size, number of cuts and whether you need a sink etc. – therefore we prefer a hand drawing and exact specification of your needs before we give you a price.
BIG suggest that cover panels and additions be in the same material as the fronts. However, the plinth should be matte black (NCS S 9000-N gloss 20).
The painted version is matte white (NCS S 0500-N gloss 20). The veneered front is European oak coated with clear wax.
