Maximizing space: Smart wardrobe solutions for a small bedroom

Maximizing space: Smart wardrobe solutions for a small bedroom

Having a small bedroom can create a safe and calm place to end the day, perfect for rest and relaxation. However, it can also mean you have less storage space than you’d like, but that’s what storage solutions are all about: maximizing space so that you can fit in far more than you realized you could.

It’s not only about using the space; it’s also about keeping the aesthetic of your space calming and tidy so that your bedroom continues to be a place that brings you a sense of balance and harmony. If you have a small bedroom with no closet or a very small closet, take a look at our recommendation for maximizing space in a small bedroom.

Always declutter first

This one might seem obvious, but don’t make the mistake of thinking you have too little space, when really you have too much stuff. When considering how to organize and maximize your small bedroom storage space, give yourself time to go through what you already have. Donate, re-home, or sell what you don’t need.

Behind the bed storage

If you don’t have any closet space in your bedroom, consider the walls behind and to the sides of your bed. Building a storage unit around this space can be unexpected, but it’s a great use of often-unused wall space. If you already have a headboard, you can use that as a frame to build around. Cabinets that go across the top of the headboard and up to the ceiling, paired with long closets to either side of the bed, create a space-saving and attractive storage solution that also creates a comfortable and cozy bed nook.

Use your angles

Bedrooms can present issues such as sloped walls, random nooks, and other unusual angles that might not make sense for your decor. By building a small wardrobe that considers the angles, you can use that space to your advantage. A right angle built into a sloped roof can become a vanity, desk, or bench. A nook can be used for shelving, hanging clothes by adding a rod, or as a shoe display. Include a bench for extra storage plus seating.

Consider a freestanding closet

For those without built-in closets, a freestanding closet is an excellent alternative. These versatile units can be placed anywhere and they come in various heights and widths, from slim wardrobe cabinets to larger freestanding closets, making them perfect for small bedrooms. A well-chosen freestanding closet can provide ample storage without overwhelming the room's design.

Turning a bedroom into a closet

If you want a more extensive transformation, consider turning an entire bedroom into a walk-in closet. This involves creating dedicated spaces for clothing, shoes, and accessories, often using built-in shelving and cabinets. A well-designed walk-in closet can make your morning routine more efficient and keep your items organized and accessible.

Bench storage

Benches are a great multi-use item, so make sure to utilize them when possible. A bench provides extra seating plus storage. Reform benches can include solid wood drawers in natural oak, smoked oak, and ash, which can easily be paired with the exterior for a unified look. Place a bench at the end of your bed, along the wall between high cabinets, or underneath a window for a cozy reading nook. The drawers can then be used for extra pillows, bed linen, towels, or whatever else you need to store. Top your bench with pillows to add personality and comfort.
