The design philosophy behind PROFILE and SURFACE, designed with Norm Architects
Copenhagen-based Norm Architects works across architecture, interiors, furniture, and product design. While the studio's projects vary in scale and function, they share a consistent approach: thoughtful design should enhance everyday life through simplicity, material honesty, and careful attention to how people experience space. Our two collections with Norm Architects, PROFILE and SURFACE, embody these principles in different ways. Both are rooted in architectural thinking rather than conventional kitchen design, yet each explores a distinct aspect of the relationship between design, material, and everyday living. PROFILE focuses on subtle detailing, integrated functionality, and a calm architectural expression. SURFACE explores the tactile qualities of natural materials and how they evolve over time. Together, they offer two complementary perspectives on contemporary kitchen design.
The PROFILE collection
PROFILE began with the ambition to create a kitchen collection that naturally integrates into its surroundings. Designed as much like a piece of furniture as a functional workspace, PROFILE uses carefully considered details to create a calm and understated expression. The defining feature is the integrated handle, marked by subtle lines and a slightly extruded aluminum profile that ties surfaces together while protecting the edges. Rather than treating the handle as a separate component, Norm Architects made it part of the design itself. The result is a kitchen that feels visually cohesive and less fragmented than conventional cabinetry.
The collection is available in Natural Oak, Dark Oak, and a palette of painted colors selected to blend effortlessly into contemporary interiors. Whether finished in oak veneer or muted paint, the intention remains the same: to create a kitchen that complements the surrounding architecture rather than competing with it. The oak variants showcase carefully selected European oak and emphasize the warmth and tactile qualities of natural materials. The painted variants offer a more monochromatic expression while maintaining the collection's quiet character. PROFILE also includes open shelving designed as a natural extension of the kitchen. Paired with matching countertops in Fenix laminate, ceramic, or stainless steel, the collection creates a consistent, considered design language throughout the room. The overall effect is understated, functional, and enduring. PROFILE does not seek attention through dramatic gestures. Instead, its character emerges through proportion, craftsmanship, and thoughtful detail.
The SURFACE collection
If PROFILE is defined by subtle detail, SURFACE is defined by thoughtful reduction. Designed through a rigorous process of removing anything unnecessary, SURFACE strips the kitchen back to its essential elements—no profiles, grooves, or decorative features. The material itself becomes the focal point. Available in Natural Oak and Smoked Oak, the collection is crafted from sawn-cut European oak veneer with solid oak edges. The textured surface gives the fronts a distinctly tactile quality that invites touch and highlights the wood's character.
A defining aspect of SURFACE is its relationship with time. Rather than resisting change, the collection embraces it. Sunlight, everyday use, and the passing years gradually influence the wood's appearance, creating a patina unique to each home. This idea reflects a broader principle in Norm Architects' work: designing environments that engage both body and mind through authentic materials and sensory experience. The fronts are treated with beeswax, preserving the oak's natural texture and depth. As with fine furniture, the material benefits from care and develops character through use. SURFACE was originally conceived as a push-to-open solution, reinforcing its clean and uninterrupted appearance. However for those who prefer handles, specially designed options are available in brass, burnished copper, black metal, and stainless steel. Each material complements the wood's natural character and ages gracefully over time to create a collection with a strong material prescence and quiet confidence rooted in craftmanship.

How to choose between PROFILE and SURFACE
Although both collections reflect Norm Architects' design philosophy, they create different experiences. PROFILE is ideal for those drawn to subtle architectural detailing and a furniture-inspired expression. The integrated handle creates visual continuity while maintaining a refined and understated appearance. This collection is designed to integrate seamlessly into the architecture of the home. SURFACE takes a more elemental approach. By reducing the design to material, texture, and proportion, it allows natural oak to become the defining feature. It is particularly suited to homes where authentic materials and the development of patina are valued in everyday living. One collection expresses itself through carefully resolved details. The other expresses itself through material honesty. Both demonstrate Norm Architects' commitment to creating spaces that feel calm, intuitive, and built to endure.
